Motorcycles Shouldn't Use Diesel Engines Why?

In Vietnam in particular and in developing countries in general, cars still account for a relatively high proportion of the total number of people's means of transport, and it is forecasted that in the coming years, this proportion will still be quite high. High.

As one thing we have noticed, motorbikes only use gasoline engines, in which diesel engines (also known as diesel engines) have higher efficiency than gasoline engines, and diesel fuel prices are cheaper. gasoline, diesel fuel also does not ignite at normal temperatures so it will be less dangerous than gasoline. In addition, the diesel engine is less prone to minor failures because it does not have an ignition and carburetor, etc. In general, diesel engines have many advantages over gasoline engines like that but why do manufacturers make them? do not install diesel engines on motorcycles?

What are some of the main reasons why diesel engines are not used on motorcycles? It is also incorrect to say that it is not used because in fact, there were motorcycles equipped with diesel engines in the past, but now it is difficult to find a motorcycle using diesel engines. The main reasons:

  1. Big – Heavy – Bulky

Because the diesel engine works on the principle that air is compressed at high temperature and pressure, then new diesel fuel is injected into the combustion chamber, then under such high pressure and high temperature, diesel oil self-igniting and generating work, but it does not need an ignition system like a gasoline engine, so it needs very high compression ratios, usually the compression ratio of a diesel engine falls in the range of 15-24, while the diesel engine gasoline engine is only 8-13.

Compression ratio: when the bittong operates in the cylinder, it has 2 limit positions, the top dead center position (TDC) and the bottom dead center position (BDC), when the bittong is in the bottom dead center position, the volume of At that time, the combustion chamber is the largest (Vmax), when the bittong goes to the top dead center, the volume of the combustion chamber is at this time the smallest (Vmin). Compression ratio = Vmax/Vmin. Thus, in order to have a high compression ratio, the volume of the bitton at the bottom dead center must increase, when that volume is increased, one can increase the diameter of the cylinder or increase the length. of the cylinder, so it will lead to an increase in the size and mass of the diesel engine, which is also why the same power is produced because the diesel engine is always heavier or is larger than the gasoline engine. Therefore, integrating such a large engine on a small motorcycle will not be suitable for us using a gasoline engine.

  1. More Vibration – Noisier

Also due to the problem of needing a high compression ratio of the diesel engine, the length of the cylinder increases, when the length of the cylinder increases, it will lead to the crank and the length of the crankshaft also increases. . Mechanically, the bittong of a diesel engine will fluctuate in a wider range than a gasoline engine, so it will vibrate more and be more noisy than a gasoline engine. Currently, there are technologies in cars that can handle this high vibration and noise, but it is very difficult to handle this noise of diesel engines that are installed on motorcycles or small cars. is problem.

  1. High price.

The cost of a diesel engine and its repair cost will be higher than that of a gasoline engine. Because diesel engines operate at high temperatures and pressures, the materials that make up diesel engines need to be better and more durable than gasoline engines. Secondly, although the structure of the diesel engine is simpler than that of the gasoline engine, some parts and details require higher precision, for example, the fuel pump system of the engine. Although it requires more precision and sophistication, it is also more expensive than the ignition system on a gasoline engine.

  1. Motorcycles need more power than torque.

Also due to the structural nature of the diesel engine, when operating, the bittong it will have to work over a longer distance, so the crank and crankshaft have a longer length of the gasoline engine, then the traction force or to be more precise, the torque of the diesel engine will be greater than that of the gasoline engine, but the acceleration of the diesel engine is lower than that of the gasoline engine, ie its capacity is lower than that of the gasoline engine. In general, diesel engines will be more suitable for large vehicles that need large traction such as trucks, large SUVs; but for small cars or motorbikes, it is not suitable, especially for motorbikes and motorbikes, it needs acceleration more than traction.

  1. Need an efficient cooler.

Diesel engine operates at high pressure and high temperature, so its cooling mode needs to be better than gasoline engine. cumbersome and greatly increased cost.

  1. High technical requirements.

A diesel engine without the borium ignition system is the same as a gasoline engine, or it does not have the same carburetor as a gasoline engine, but the fuel injection system for a diesel engine is usually more expensive. gasoline engine so if in terms of cost, it is more expensive.

  1. Hard to start in cold weather.

Currently, diesel engines want to work well in harsh weather conditions, especially when the weather is cold, the oil engine is often difficult to start, so on modern cars today, they are equipped with a drying system. For the air to warm up during starting, if it is installed such a kit for motorbikes, it is not suitable because motorbikes are vehicles that require cheap prices and satisfy the majority of consumers. used, so if you want a diesel engine to work optimally on a motorcycle, but you need to install so many things, then in terms of cost alone, it is already unreasonable, not to mention it will make The engine system is more cumbersome and more complex.

  1. A booster is required.

Currently, diesel engines want to operate efficiently, car manufacturers often have turbochargers to pump more air into the cylinders to increase the efficiency of fuel combustion, if so many things are integrated. then it will be very cumbersome but the cost is quite high, especially the turbocharger is quite expensive.

  1. Toxic emissions.

One reason that can be said for developed countries but Vietnam does not have very strict requirements is that diesel engines emit more toxic fumes than gasoline engines, so in some countries there are high requirements for Environmental Law. In the market, if you want to use a diesel engine on vehicles, the engine needs to be fitted with a catalyst, and if you want to install this catalyst on a motorcycle, it is not reasonable anymore.
