1.1. Subjects studying for a class C driver's license

According to Clause 8, Article 16 Circular 12/2017/TT-BGTVT, a Class C driver's license makes you qualified to operate the following types of transport vehicles:

• Trucks of all types (except heavy trucks such as Containers).
• The tractor pulls a trailer with a design load of 3.5 tons.
• Types of vehicles required for class B1 and B2 driving licenses.

According to Circular 38/2019/TT-BGTVT Amending Circular 12/2017, the latest class C driver's license exam process is as follows:

Step 1: Theory test.

The test includes questions related to road traffic laws, driving techniques, common vehicle structure and repair, transportation operations, and driver ethics.

• Exam time: 40 questions in 24 minutes.
• Minimum number of questions that must be answered correctly: 36/40 questions.
• Special requirements: do not make mistakes in the marked sentences.

Step 2: Take the test on simulation software (a new test to be applied from 2023).

• The test includes computer simulation situations, randomly drawn from a set of 120 synthetic simulation situations.
• Number of situational questions: 10 questions.
• Minimum score: 35/50.

Step 3: Practice test in the picture.

• The contestant must drive the vehicle to perform the tests sequentially arranged in the picture.
• Number of exams: 11 exams.
• Minimum score: 80/100 points.

Step 4: Practice driving test on the road.

• Lesson 4 – Through wheel tracks and narrow perpendicular roads: Go in the correct lane for the class you are testing and enter the test track to signal the start of the test.
• Lesson 5 - Going through an intersection with a traffic light signal: When you see a green light but there is still a car ahead, you need to watch for enough time before going because the number of seconds on the green light is very short, to avoid going through the red light.
• Lesson 6 – Winding roads: Pay attention to the rule “forward, stick to the back – back, stick to the belly”, steer quickly and decisively.
• Lesson 7 – Merge the car vertically into the parking spot: If the chicken coop is backed up but there is no check signal but it exits, it will be disqualified.
• Lesson 8 – Stopping where a railway passes by: Failure to stop will result in disqualification.
• Lesson 9 – Change number on straight line:
  • When listening to the signal: vertical.
  • When driving to the upshift sign: increase to 2nd gear.
  • When passing the sign at least 20 km/h: in gear 2 and speed over 20 km/h.
  • When passing the maximum speed sign of 20 km/h: in gear 1 and speed less than 20 km/h.
• Lesson 10 – Pair the car horizontally, park in parallel: Back up to the place you need to park when both ends and one side are locked by obstacles.
• Lesson 11 – Finish: You need to turn on the turn signal during the finishing test and stop the car at the finish line (do not run back to the starting point). Only when the wheel passes all the lines or the machine reports passing will the test be completed.

During the exam process, you need to note:

• When the siren or flashing lights sound, turn on the emergency lights and stop the vehicle.
• When there is a signal to continue, you need to wait for the emergency light to turn off before proceeding.

2.4. Learn and practice driving on the road with a class C driver's license

The road test will be more realistic, not as slow as the test. However, for this test, candidates need to have good driving habits. Experiences when studying and taking exams you should pay attention to:

• Practice driving regularly in many different terrains, including roads, urban roads and mountain passes to improve driving skills.
• Remember the instructions and tips that the teacher noted during the learning process.

Things to note when taking road practice tests:

• Adjust the seat appropriately, correct sitting posture and wear a seat belt.
• Pay close attention and listen to the teacher's instructions.
